Introduction: The Safety Component We Take for Granted

The rear windshield wiper motor is a humble hero. We rarely think about it until we are driving in heavy rain and need visibility. If this motor fails, it’s not just an inconvenience—it’s a safety hazard.

Manufacturing these motors is complex because they combine sophisticated electronic controls with high-wear mechanical parts. Whether it is a hairline fracture in a solder point or a misaligned brush in the housing, the smallest defect can compromise the entire unit.

Inspecting these components requires a system that can verify electrical connectivity and dimensional accuracy simultaneously. Manual inspection struggles to track this many variables, leading to potential recalls and reputational damage.

The Challenge: Solder, Springs, and Spacing

The project goal was to control the quality of the PCB solder joints while also verifying the precisión dimensional of the motor accessories.

The defect list essentially cataloged every potential failure point in the electromechanical assembly process.

  1. Problemas de soldadura: Missed solder, bridges, residue, and oxidized joints.
  2. Integridad de los componentes: Damaged carbon brushes, foreign matter, and missing glue.
  3. Dimensional/Positional Accuracy: Is the spring clip in the right spot? Are the contacts aligned? Is the plastic gap size correct? Is the shrapnel positioned correctly?

Catching a “poor solder joint” requires different imaging logic than measuring a “plastic gap.” Doing both in one station is the challenge.

Solder Springs and Spacing

The wiper motor assembly requires simultaneous inspection of soldering quality and mechanical alignment.

The Solution: Dual-Camera AI Station

UnitX desplegó un dedicado dual-camera inspection system powered by AI algorithms capable of handling this hybrid complexity.

UnitX’s inspection station integrates with the assembly line to provide real-time feedback to the MES.

Capacidades del sistema:

  • Hybrid Defect Recognition: The AI model was trained on two distinct datasets: soldering defects (texture/color analysis) and assembly defects (geometric/positional analysis).
  • Integración MES: Results are fed back to the equipment and the MES (Sistema de ejecución de fabricación) in real-time. This allows for comprehensive quality tracking—if a specific batch has “Spring Clip” issues, the system alerts the line immediately.
  • hardware: Powered by UnitX OptiX imaging and Corteza processing units.

Results: Precise Assembly Verification

The system proved that UnitX’s solution can master the complexity of electromechanical assembly.

  • 100% Catch: The system achieved a 0% False Acceptance Rate, acting as a gatekeeper for every electromechanical assembly.
  • Yield Breakthrough: By refining the inspection logic, UnitX solution pushed yield over 70%, drastically reducing waste and maximizing the plant’s daily output.
  • Filtrado de precisión: Even while checking for 16+ defect types, the system maintains a False Rejection Rate of <5%, distinguishing true failures from minor cosmetic variations.
  • No Bottlenecks: A comprehensive, multi-point inspection is finished within a tiempo de ciclo de 12 segundos, seamlessly integrating into the existing assembly flow.

Defect Visualization

The images below highlight the system’s versatility. It spots microscopic issues like “Poor Solder Joints” while simultaneously measuring macroscopic issues like “Plastic Gaps” y “Snap-fit Position Accuracy.”

Conclusión

A wiper motor is more than just a motor; it’s a complex assembly of circuits and mechanics. Inspecting it requires a vision system that is equally versatile. UnitX’s AI solution bridges the gap between PCB inspection and dimensional gauging, ensuring that when the rain starts, the wipers work.
